THE ARTWORK
CANDY-COLORED SIGHT (Oil on Canvas, 2022)
“Tanglaw, meaning illumination, or in Tagalog, ‘liwanag,’ refers to the act of providing or creating light. Illumination can also mean the act of making something clearer to the viewer, bringing things to light. This concept closely aligns with the practice I employ in my paintings, which I call ‘micro on macro.’ This technique involves making tiny, hardly visible details more apparent to the audience. When you practice the art of noticing, you illuminate aspects of your surroundings that were previously in the shadows or overlooked—much like the dried flowers and leaves featured in my FlowerBox: Sight Beyond Sight series. However, in this context, the subject matter is not only presented as itself but is represented in richer, more saturated colors with heightened contrast, emphasizing the light against the shadows.” – Shannah Orencio
THE ARTIST
Shannah Orencio is a visual artist whose journey began at the University of the Philippines Diliman, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication in 2016. Despite her background, she chose to pursue a career as an exhibiting painter.
Orencio’s canvases are adorned with the delicate beauty of dried flowers and leaves, capturing the essence of nature's evolution. Her art delves into the interplay between the minuscule and the vast, embodying the philosophy of essentialism and mindfulness. Often depicted in vibrant flower boxes, her creations invite viewers into a world where the art of noticing transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, celebrating the micro on a macro scale.
