BUILDING STORIES ( Oil and acrylic on canvas diptych, 2023)
“Books are not mere objects but conduits of knowledge, empathy, and societal transformation. They connect people across time and space, inspire critical thinking and creativity, and challenge us to envision a better world. By valuing and promoting our stories, we strengthen the fabric of our societies, ensuring that future generations inherit a legacy of enlightenment, compassion, and progress. Thus, the relationship between books, people, and society is symbiotic and essential—a testament to the enduring power of words to shape hearts, minds, and futures.” – Japs Antido
THE ARTIST
John Paul “Japs” Antido hails from Antipolo and studied Fine Arts majoring in Painting at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He uses the impasto technique of laying thick paint with textured brushstrokes using vivid colors and bright hues. By mixing traditional and modern symbols, he is able to succinctly capture the vibrancy of Filipino culture, its hybridity, and its ever-changing nature.
Japs has received praise and awards for his work — grand prize in the Art Petron National Student Art Competition (2005 and 2002), grand prize in the 2024 Rizal Wine Label Competition, second place in the Don Papa Rum Painting Competition (2019 and 2018), shortlisted in the 2011 Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards, the 2008 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence National Competition, the 2nd GSIS Annual Painting Competition in 2005, just to name a few. He has also exhibited in Laos, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, and Denmark.
